Intent and reality exercise

There are several factors that cause a gap between our intent to involve young people in decisions and their experience. Listed below are several possible reasons, did you note down these reasons? Did you consider any others not on this list?

Tokenism and lack of power

Children and young people feel their input is just for show, with little to no actual decision-making authority or impact on the final outcome. 

Poor feedback loops

Failing to show young people how their views influenced decisions, or not explaining why certain suggestions were not adopted, breaks trust.

Intimidating Environments

Formal, adult-led, or inaccessible meeting structures (e.g., in-person only, rigid schedules) can feel unwelcoming or unsafe for young participants.

Misconceptions and Attitudes

Implicit bias that young people lack the expertise or maturity to contribute meaningfully, leading to patronising interactions.

Cultural and Power Differences

A lack of understanding of the diverse backgrounds of young people, or failure to address the inherent power dynamic between adults and youth.

Resource Limitations

Limited time, funding, and staff capacity to properly support and facilitate meaningful engagement.
